Geoffrey Rivett is the author of a widely used history of the NHS. This frequently updated site often used as a teaching resource in health sciences provides

  • up-to-the week information of events since 1998, linking to other Internet sources
  • the inheritance of the NHS in 1948 (book text; large file, 1 minute download)
  • a brief summary of events since 1948
  • clinical developments and organisational changes in the British National Health service from 1988-1997 (book text; large file, 1 minute download)
  • access to the full text of The Development of the London Hospital System

I deal primarily with England, and medicine - not dentistry/pharmacy/optical services.  Devolution is creating major differences in UK health services. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not specifically considered.

Minor changes are regularly made to all sections as our perspectives change and recent additions to the text include
  • Hospital star ratings
  • International expertise for NHS
  • Wanless Report and the Budget (Milburn page)
  • SHA Franchise plans
  • Human resources in the NHS Plan

References:  From Cradle to Grave is well referenced.  The current chapter gives no references but they exist on my master copy.  Sources used include the BMJ, Health Service Journal and The Times.  I acknowledge my debt to these publications, to those writing for them and to those who have spoken to me about NHS and clinical developments.

(Geoffrey Rivett's earlier book) is out of print.  It deals with the development of hospitals in London in the 125 years before the NHS began, and the development of the NHS itself, e.g. the chapter on Bevan.  It is now almost entirely on a subweb of www.nhshistory.net, and an additional chapter covering 1982-2002 is being written.
